Phuyupatamarca

Terraces above the cloud forest

Also written Phuyupatamarka or Puyupatamarca

Phuyupatamarca is a place to look both outward and downward. Mountain ridges open beyond its terraces, while stone steps and walls lead the eye back into the site. My photographs show the ruin from above and from the narrow paths that pass beside its terraces.

Understanding the site

The site sits high on the Inca Trail and is widely associated with the description “the city above the clouds.” Stone baths or fountains form part of the surviving complex. Water features are an important part of understanding the site, although a photograph of a channel alone cannot establish how it was used.

Water and formal space

The sanctuary master plan records an upper usnu, six fountains, terraces, rooms and plazas, with the trail passing through the site. The inventory’s identification of an usnu gives a ceremonial dimension to the architecture. That is more specific evidence than assuming that every impressive mountain viewpoint was a shrine. [2]

Why this site is special

Water, elevation and movement can be considered together here. Follow the constructed levels and the spaces that connect them. Fountains are physical evidence; a detailed purification ceremony for every passing traveller would be a much more specific interpretation. Keeping those distinct makes the site more interesting, not less. The photographs let you see how the architecture creates a sequence through the slope. Clouds add atmosphere, but the arrangement remains meaningful even when the distant view disappears.

Reading the landscape

The stepped platforms on the upper slope and the tighter cluster of structures below offer two distinct views of the same place. Compare the broad, sunlit ridges with the heavy stone retaining walls close to the camera. The changing distance is what makes this series useful as a visual guide.

Look more closely

  • Trace the stairway cutting through the terrace sequence.
  • Compare the upper terraces with the lower built complex.
  • Look at how the pathways follow the slope rather than flattening it.

What becomes clearer when you move from an overall view to the height of a single retaining wall?
